Conducted By Lanai Jarrico
Friday Night Talkshow Transcript 11/21/08: EastcoastTony Dubois, CEO of Averlast Boxing WITH Smash Lane of Fighting for Fighters organization
Archives
Wurlitzer: What’s your avatar history in Second Life?
EastCoastTony Dubois: I have had this current AV Name for about 8 months, I have always been EastCoastTony In SL, but my first AV, well I was a noobie and screwed it up a little, so I did away with that one after about 3 months and became who I am today...
Wurlitzer: What is Averlast and how did you get involved?
EastCoastTony Dubois: I met Karine Koba actually the first time under my 1st AV account. Later she and I worked together on a project that I was involved in from my start of SL and once that project was finished, she offered me a place with Averlast. We hit it off pretty good from the start.
Wurlitzer: What was your inspiration for coming into Second Life?
EastCoastTony Dubois: I was introduced to SL when I was asked to come in world and over see a sim and group. At the time it was a short term deal with long term gains. I was in charge of a MMA sim and group called MMA Jacked. It’s a RL business and web site that’s dedicated to MMA fans. Kind of like a My-Space. The Web site is still active, but for now the Jacked sim is down due to funding and budget timing. The long term gain from it was the connection I obtained with Averlast and now we will be cross branding the two with a MMA clothing line.
Wurlitzer: Where is the Averlast located?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Averlast is located on the Trueblood sim and from the start had at least 1/3 of the sim and really used every available section and prim that could be used. In the most recent weeks, Averlast had purchased more land at Trueblood, and now are the proud owners of approximately 80% of the sim now. This was a huge gain for Averlast. Karine not only obtained more space, prims and options, she also freed up some laggy scripts that was on the sim with the other property owners. We have already seen a noticeable difference in sim performance since the property gain.
Wurlitzer: What can you expect to find at Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Plenty of action, fun, and the best members and staff of all of SL. We have it all, from competition for the more serious gamers and we have a fun side as well for the ones that are here more for the fun and to communicate with other.
Wurlitzer: Who are the staff involved with Averlast, & what are their roles?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Well none of this would be possible without the guidance and vision of the Averlast Boss, Karine Koba. She started Averlast alone over a year ago and since then she has developed an awesome team. Abel Undercity is a man of many hats. He would actually probably be called Karine’s right hand man. He handles so much from handling adverting needs, and various other business functions. He has his plate full at the moment, with Averlast, like that was not enough for him to do, but he also is our primary ring announcer, and works as a judge, security and product designer from clothing to posters. Recall the only thing I have now seen Abel do yet is being a ring girl...lol… But I am sure if he was asked to do it, he would find a way to make it work…lol…
NEXT in order would be Conan Horan.... Conan is the Averlast Head Coach. He handles the training and supervises all of the other coaches, as well as handles the member fight request and sign ups. He is also a ring announcer, judge and security when needed. Now, from time to time and late at night, I have seen Conan strutting his stuff in the ring practicing to be ring girl one day...lol.. Thank God no one else has seen this…lol.
Then we have Aries Westland… Aries is one of our Coaches as well, and being that he is from the UK, it works out great because he is in the gym early SLT and most every mornings and a lot during the day as well. Aries has a special gift with detail. He has also designed a number of different products for Averlast and he is also the current LW title holder… But he Knows that I am coming for that belt… so he is a little worried about now…lol… Another fine Averlast Coach is Calvinizm2g Quan, Calvin is one that will take any and all steps to see you succeed in what you set out to do in the ring. He is a MW fighter and one of the best at that as well. Calvin also Judges for us as well when needed. Our newest staff member is Dann Burnstein. Dann has just been selected to try his hand in couching. He is now one of out Assist Coaches and shows a lot of potential and is focused to make a difference within the members he helps. Candi Triellis is the Averlast Model Manager and ring girl coordinator… She brings us the beauty to the gym and Wurl… you know how important that is. Randur Source is also a great source to Averlast… He is our #1 Engineer meaning scripter and giving ideas… He is a man with a man’s answers and design ideas…
Wurlitzer: Is it easy to become an Averlast Boxer?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Sure it is… All you have to do is be willing to try it… And as you can see, we have the staff to assist you in your needs
Wurlitzer: How do I become an Averlast Boxer?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Averlast has the lowest cost fight system in SL I believe… Some charge as much as 1K just to fight in there group. Well that makes it a big risk for some to take… And many are not comfortable it that price…
Wurlitzer: How much does it cost to purchase gloves?
EastCoastTony Dubois: For as little as 125L you can be in the fighting business with Averlast. We have custom work that can be done for members and we have different type of boxing gear and clothing… You can express yourself in many different ways with Averlast.
Wurlitzer: If you have other gloves than Averlast gloves, can you use them here?
EastCoastTony Dubois: No sir, that’s one of our few rules at Averlast. In order to use the Averlast facilities, you are required to only use our gloves and fight system.
Wurlitzer: You also have a fighting system feature, how does that work?
EastCoastTony Dubois: The fight system is scripted within the gloves… Once the gloves are activated then it’s just a manner of using the 4 arrow keys on your key board. Each Arrow key represents a different move. This is not a HUD like so many other systems. To me this is better and more user friendly than HUD systems.
Wurlitzer: How much does it pay to be Averlast Boxer?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Well Wurl, we do it different than most fight groups. Not only does the winner get paid, but the loser gets paid as well. We understand the importance of this for all of our fighters to get something in return for there efforts in performing.
Wurlitzer: Do you have trainers?
EastCoastTony Dubois: We have the best trainers of SL at Averlast, and the most up to date equipment to assist you in you training needs. We are always coming up with new and better ways to assist out fighters in becoming all what they want to be.
Wurlitzer: What was your first Averlast experience in SL like?
EastCoastTony Dubois: To be honest I did not have a big gaming background, and it was something to get used to for sure. I had a sorry PC in the beginning and we all know how that can make us feel. So my first thoughts of SL were not the best actually. But I made some PC upgrades and my SL thought started to get better for me… I still have a lot to learn, but am having fun now…
Wurlitzer: How do the tournaments work?
EastCoastTony Dubois: We have monthly tournaments that fighters of all weight classes request to be in. Once we have the fighters sign ups in hand, then we start to match them up according to ability. This way we are able to conduct the best Tournaments for the fighters and fans. Any trained fighter can sign up for a tourney. They must at least have a LW fight tag.
Wurlitzer: What other fights do you have?
EastCoastTony Dubois: We also hold Sanctioned Fights. These fights as well as tourney fights count towards fighter records. Sanctioned are held 2-3 times a week and fighters can actually challenge there match up. Most Sanctioned are conducted by Fighter Request.
Wurlitzer: How long has Averlast existed?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Wow, seems like forever…lol… Averlast have sure put its marks and scars in SL. It the oldest and longest lasting Boxing Gym of all OF SL. Averlast is now working on its second year in SL, and we have many more years to follow.
Wurlitzer: How many locations has Averlast gone through?
EastCoastTony Dubois: From the start, Karine Koba used Trueblood as the Home Sim for Averlast. And today it’s still home and our only sim ATM. But with new developing and sponsor leads, we hope to be able to expand even more than what we have in the last few months.
Wurlitzer: Do you have any plans to expand Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Yes most certainly we do… We are always looking ways to do just that… At Averlast, we are always looking for ways to be able to offer the members of Averlast the Best of the Best. Really it’s hard to top what we already have, because so much time and effort has been put into it, but we do have a NEW boxing system that will be out soon, and I gotta tell you, it’s the finest system in SL… Our members will love this new system and we are in the final days of making all the long hours and work a reality. This new system will be released soon. So Wurl... you will have a reason to come to the gym to work out now…
Wurlitzer: Has anybody helped Averlast out?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Averlast is a team effort for sure. With over 960 members, there is no way it can be a one person operation. Karine has built the finest staff that is available, and as we grow so does our staffing needs. All of our staff is willing to go the extra mile and to assist us with all efforts in being the best of the best.
Wurlitzer: Are you the same person in RL as you are in SL?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Yes sir, believe it or not…lol… I am just as crazy in RL as I am in SL. I love to have fun and really enjoy seeing others happy in life. I know when to be serious and when to play. Life is good and always better when you enjoy yourself and what you do.
Wurlitzer: Do you have any plans on what you would eventually like to do in SL?
EastCoastTony Dubois: For the most part I am doing that now. I am already involved with the #1 Boxing Gym of SL and eventually I would like to be able to offer MMA style fighting to our members. Karine and I have already discussed this and we are in the ground stages of making that happen for our members.
Wurlitzer: Right now, is your Second Life, what you want it to be?
EastCoastTony Dubois: I gotta admit I had a lot to learn about SL and balancing it with RL… SL is very addicting to many, and I can relate to that. When you’re around good people, involved in a great business and enjoy what you’re doing, then it’s sometimes hard to face the ups and downs of RL. In SL I can have all the stuff that I want in RL but even have it better in SL. It actually only cost pennies on the dollar to obtain many different things. I have more cars in SL than our Local RL car dealer...lol.
Wurlitzer: If you didn't have Averlast, what would you have done instead?
EastCoastTony Dubois: HMM that’s a hard question for me, because I really have not been in the position to think like that. I guess I would have become a club owner or maybe even a SL Talk show host of Friday night..lol..
Wurlitzer: Is there a group to join for Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Yes, and if anyone is interested in becoming a member, then please see either Conan, Myself, or any of the coaching staff to become added to the group. Then you will be able to get our notices and obtain weekly information concerning Averlast. You don’t have to be a fighter or fight to be a member of the Averlast Group. You can just come out and hang with us and watch the fights. But I must warn you first… You may end up having fun as well so enter the gym with caution…lol…
Wurlitzer: What kind of exclusive membership perks would you get for joining the Averlast group?
EastCoastTony Dubois: hmm well by being in the best and biggest sports group of SL you would get many opportunities and meet new people. Surly new doors can be opened as new friendships are being made. We truly value and respect our members and therefore rules were made to keep our members happy and Drama free as much as we can. These rules are enforced on a daily basic and honored by all in the group.
Wurlitzer: How many members would you say are active in the Averlast group?
EastCoastTony Dubois: We currently have over 960 members. The activity level goes up and down with RL needs. For land that does not have any campers we are able to hold traffic numbers above 10K on a daily basic.
Wurlitzer: What kind of events do you have at Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: We talked out the Tourneys and Sanctioned fights already. We also have Brawls on a random schedule. Brawls are really fun to enter and to just watch. Any Averlast group member with Averlast Gloves can enter the brawl. We have from 10 -20 members in the ring all at one time trying to beat all the others in the ring with you out or what we call
(The KO)… This is the time to let your hair down and really have fun with the competition. From time to time we have a little smack talking going on in the ring and that just adds spice to the fun…lol… Most of the smack talk is done while on voice, so if you come to the gym to watch a brawl, be sure to get the full affect and have voice turned on… You may even get lucky and hear me talk again…lol… Well I guess I can’t hide here can I… Wurl you have been to a few of our Brawl, and have heard the smack talk first hand…lol. It’s almost like Comedy Central… And by the way, we also have and play a live music stream daily, and when we are not sparing, fighting or Brawling we are dancing and listen to Wurl sing…lol… So when you come to the gym, send me a song request either to listen to, to to step up to the mic to sing. It’s a lot of FUN and as long as Conan is not singing you will be okay....lol…
Wurlitzer: How many boxers do you currently have at Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Currently we have over 41 LW, 13 or so MW and 7, I think HW Boxers. We are growing more and more everyday and fighters are leveling up to the next weight class as needed.
Wurlitzer: What time is Averlast best open at?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Well the beauty of SL is that we can be open 24-7 with all the lights on and it not cost any more than if they were all off…lol. And because of the large member group that we have and all of the different countries and time zones, we are able to keep good numbers in the gym around the clock for the most part.
Wurlitzer: How long are the Averlast boxing matches?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Boxing matches are all set at 3min rounds. Different weight classes have different round counts. LW has 3 rounds, MW has 4 rounds and HW is 5 round fights… The brawls are set up on 20 min rounds. And norm is in just 2 rounds.
Wurlitzer: What are some upcoming Averlast events you are having for the month of Nov and Dec.?
EastCoastTony Dubois: FIGHTS FIGHST and a Few more FIGHTS…lol… we will be having our WM champ. Title fights in Dec as well as a LM title fight. Again the action is pretty much every night at Averlast. From Monday-Sunday we keep it pumping. We will be having our Christmas party in Dec and we will be offering Live Singers for that night as well. We will also be opening our Averlast Club soon, so we will have all you needs covered. ...From shopping in the Averlast store, to throwing some hands, winning money. Dancing and singing… We are truly your one stop Wonders…
Wurlitzer: What are some of the rules that boxers must follow in order to respect Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Good Sportsmanship’s always a must… With that respect will follow. Respect others as you would like to be respected… No guns or weapons are allowed, use only Averlast gloves. Any of these violations can cause you to be out of the group and gym. And Respect is ALWAYS a must!
Wurlitzer: Who designed the layout for Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Karine Koba was the master mind in designing the layout of Averlast… She builds the rings and does the custom work on gloves and Abel did the custom work with the clothing
Wurlitzer: What makes your feel that Averlast is different than most any other boxing clubs/arena in Second Life?
EastCoastTony Dubois: One the comment that we have and have been giving to our members and visitors. We have a dedicated staff and passion in the sport. We are here for the love of the sport and the love of others.
Wurlitzer: How did Averlast get involved with FFF/Fighting for Fighters?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Karine and I were approached by two of our members/fighters. They addressed the idea to Karine and I that they had wanted to start a way to give back to RL fighters with injuries or in retirement. The four of us met many times in the beginning and looked at different ways to make this happen. The group name was decided upon and created. Since then Smash and Abbiee have been working hard to see there hard work come to reality and start assisting RL fighters in RL and to use SL as a toll for them.
Wurlitzer: What has Fighting for Fighters done so far here in Second Life?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Wurl, if you don’t mind I would like for Smash or Abbiee to answer this, they can go in more detail about FFF than I can…
Smash Lane: Fighting For Fighters is still new in SL. So far we are making contacts in SL, such as with Karine and EastCoastTony in Averlast and with other boxing and martial arts groups.
We're also contacting other SL organizations that help people with disabilities in RL.
Wurlitzer: Smash, what are the goals of events, and awareness for the future of Fighting for Fighters?
Smash Lane: We have 2 main goals; first and foremost to reach out to disabled boxers and MMA fighters and get them help that they may need for them and/or their families. Either financial support or material. A lot of former fighters try to stay in the business, by opening gyms or teaching and training new fighters. They can always use equipment such as gloves, punching bags, things like that. We are hoping to get people to donate money or equipment like this, anything they can.
Our second goal is to get these fighters into SL, where they can continue fighting virtually, or as we like to think of it, fighting without the pain. They can also meet others with the same interest and passion for boxing or martial arts.
Wurlitzer: Smash, why is a charity in SL hard to promote, or get Volunteers?
Smash Lane: Charity is always hard to promote, in SL or RL, you are asking people to give their money or time to help others they most likely don’t even know. I think charity is actually easier to promote in SL, there are over 100 non profit organizations working in SL collecting thousands of dollars for various causes. Overhead and administrative costs are a part of any charity; it is a lot less costly in SL. As for volunteers, there are many good hearted people in RL and SL, it’s just a matter of do they have the time.
Wurlitzer: Smash, how will you be promoting Fighting for Fighters in Second life?
Smash Lane: Fighting For Fighters (FFF) will be opening on 12/6/08 on Trist (228,105.22). We are hoping to have exhibitions of boxing from Averlast and SLB Boxing as well as CE martial arts. We are going to have open tournaments with prizes for winners. There will also be a dance floor and DJ's playing live music. We have also received interest about having events for disabled people such as wheelchair boxing. We also offer a gym with training equipment as well as rings for sparring and developing skills. If someone gets tired of all that, we also have roller skating and ranges for shooting practice. There won’t be any charge for any of this, we will of course ask for donations to FFF. We are putting up ad boards where we can about all this.
We are also asking anyone and everyone we know, including you Wurl, all the groups we know, to spread the word about us and hope word of mouth does the rest.
Wurlitzer: Do you plan to take the Fighting for Fighters aspect further than Second Life, Smash?
Smash Lane: FFF is a registered corporation in RL. Right now Abbiee and I are financing it ourselves, so we're based in SL to save money. Our goal is to operate in both, SL and RL.
Wurlitzer: Smash, what can we do, to get more involved in RL with your work here in Second Life?
Smash Lane: Donate if and what you can, money, items, time, all is appreciated. We could also use help to make contacts in the boxing and fighter communities, for support and to locate people we can help. We could also use knowledgeable volunteers to help, with coaching, training or those who are familiar with working with disabled people.
Wurlitzer: What organizations do you volunteer for in RL, EastCoastTony?
EastCoastTony Dubois: In RL I have been involved in many different volunteer organizations. The list is long but range from being a Medic for the city (EMT) to coaching baseball, soccer, being a Boy Scout leader to a PTA member within the county schools… Wurl you know I was a cop for more that 13 years in RL, so I was involved a lot in trying to reach out children at an early age...
Wurlitzer: EastCoastTony, what do you do in RL?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Since my retirement as a Law Enforcement officer, I went into Sales and marketing. I am a sales rep for a Beverage Company. I enjoy working with people and the communication skills that’s involved with that.
Wurlitzer: Does Averlast have any sponsors?
EastCoastTony Dubois: We currently do have some Fight sponsors, some road show event sponsors, brawls and ad sponsors. It’s pretty obvious to a lot of smart business people, that Averlast knows how to draw a crowd and to be successful in SL. If anyone would be interested in some ad space at the gym, or if you would be interested in becoming an event sponsor, fight sponsor, Brawl sponsor, then please contact me and I will be happy to show you what we can offer you and your business.
Wurlitzer: What are some of Averlast main goals?
EastCoastTony Dubois: To make reachable goals for one. So many times new businesses try to start out to big with un-reachable goals. This is the ultimate cause of there defeat. At Averlast we make reachable goals and accomplish them and move on to the next and newest idea. Averlast is also good for some RL needs. We are able to offer a sport to someone in SL that may not be able to have the same opportunity in RL. It may be due to a current injury, long time injury or just age. I can share this with you and express better what I am talking about… Just over a year ago I was injured on my job. I messed my Right hand and Right shoulder up pretty bad. Sine my injury I have had to under go a few operations to rebuild the injured areas. Well being that I am 100% right handed and knowing my left hand was only given to me for balance; I had a lot to learn. Well Averlast in SL actually was a blessing for me. I enjoyed being at Averlast and it motivated me to use my left hand and to attempt some activities with it. I totally had to learn how to fight at Averlast with my left hand that was just used for balance for many, many, many years. See Wurl I was missing something in RL. I was a fighter; I boxed and fought in MMA fights. Well that part of my life would never be able to happen again. I have lost over 77% use to my right hand and a lot of use with my Right shoulder. So Averlast in SL gave me a part of my life back. It took me longer than most to become good at fighting at Averlast, and to be honest I still have trouble with the single use of my left hand, but I have a reason to continue and to work hard at making it better and to become for useful in RL as well. As a single father and with my 5year old daughter living with me full time, well the nights on the town is limited as well. With Averlast, I can get all my needs met when I am not able to do the same in RL… It does need balancing as we said before, but Averlast in SL is a great tool for many people and for many different reasons. There are many stories just like mine, some maybe even bigger than my personal involvement and rehab needs, but the point is, it more than just a game to so many people, and I am thankful for what I have been able to take from Averlast in SL. Because it’s done so much for me and for family, is why I am so willing to make the efforts, to go above and beyond the call of duty to keep the legacy open and to improve it in areas that will meet then RL needs of many.
Wurlitzer: What are some of the drawbacks that you’re experiencing with Averlast? (competition/campaigns)
EastCoastTony Dubois: HMM drawbacks, well one would be I guess not actually being able to reach out and touch someone… I have made some good friends in SL at Averlast and it would be nice to be able to actually get the firm hand shake, the pat on the back, the hug from your special one… But you know… we gotta be happy with what we can have and get.
Wurlitzer: Other than Averlast, are there any other places that you have in SL, EastCoastTony?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Just my Home Place...
Wurlitzer: EastCoastTony, how do you keep transparency in making sure who you are in RL becomes the same in SL?
EastCoastTony Dubois: You have to be yourself... if you’re not yourself then other will see you for that. I am a happy go lucky guy in RL that loves to fight, watch fights and promote fights and just have a good time… I am the same person in SL as I am in RL… I am true to whom I am and respect myself enough to be who I am.
Wurlitzer: What do you like to do in your spare time in SL, EastCoastTony?
EastCoastTony Dubois: Spare time???? Well I don’t get a lot of it actually…lol… we stay pretty busy at the gym, but believe it or not, I actually like to spar when I get a drop in things needed to do. Other than sparing I enjoying going to the Cowboy Country Club with is run by some good friends of our Diedrich Price and his lovely wife Allison Tobias, Chilling with my friends, going dancing and driving my bikes or cars on different tracks.
Wurlitzer: how do you go about promoting Averlast?
EastCoastTony Dubois: In-world I handle the Public Relations, sponsorships, suggestions, and Brawls for Averlast. I’m always seeking out new things to offer and ways to make it reality for our members. I try to make it fun and show others that there are 2 sides in competition. You can be competitive and still have fun. By making people smile when they are around me will only make them feel good and happy. Well Happy people Feeling Good is always a much needed combo… To bad we can’t go get that at McDonalds… Everyone knows that in the ring I am probably the biggest smack talker of SL. Its not done out of disrespect it’s done for fun… What makes it more fun is when more can get involved and share the smack talk with me… Trust me… you can’t make me mad by the things you say while we are in the ring…lol… I know what to take to heart and what not to… It’s like anything else in life… We joke and play when we are happy in what we are doing or the people we are with. So if you have not been to a smack down section at Averlast... What are you waiting for…? Actually After your show Wurl, I am on my way back to the gym, pull the gloves from the bag, jump in the ring and wait who’s NEXT… Will it be you Wurl??? If Your Scared, Then Say you’re Scared…lol....Maybe if not you Wurl… I can get Conan in the Ring... Now that will be a smack down conversation for all to see…lol…
