Note about this outfit - The outfit is called Osakana Alice, and is a special charity version of the CandyCandy Alice that features a cute fish pattern. The term Osakana for this outfit comes from the Japanese children's song "Osakana Tengoku" (Fish Paradise); which is probably what the cats in need are hoping for. The outfit I'm wearing costs L$100 and can be purchased at the Animal Refuge Kansai building, it's an outfit that 100% of proceeds go to charity to help abandoned or animals in distress in the Kansai region of Japan.

12/5/08 Friday Night Talkshow/Transcript: Serenity Semple - BareRose

Wurlitzer: What’s your avatar history in Second Life?

Serenity: The owner and main designer is June Dion. June started from August 2005, and the shop originally was a 10 prim vendor on her first land, which then moved to a 4096 square-meter land, once she started getting some help from staff the store has now grown to 3 Sims. That's what June said for her avatar history because mostly her SL has been BareRose…

I started in July 2005 myself; I originally joined just to check out what a virtual world was like. I never expected to be where I am now, I only happened upon June's shop when I was searching for Japanese things. If you would've told me then it would be as huge as it is now or even working here - I probably would've called you crazy.

Wurlitzer: What is BareRose and how did you get involved?

Serenity: BareRose is a giant store, we mostly sell clothing but you can find tons of other items such as skins, hair, shoes, furniture, etc. You name it, we most likely have it. I got involved as mentioned before through just happening upon BareRose even when it was a small store. Ever since that time it became my favorite store and I always was shopping there, hanging out with friends (who are staff now), and it's just been like a home and family to me.

Wurlitzer: Where is BareRose located?

Serenity: Currently we own the BareRose sim (which is called BareRose); we also have the Black Cat and White Wolf Sims that we use for other branches and activities as well.

Wurlitzer: How long did it take to create BareRose?

Serenity: June remembers one month after she joined SL was when she started making clothes, soon she began her little shop which was the small vendor, then to another store area, and eventually to her own sim - which branched off into 2 sims then eventually 3. Overall it's been a fast paced store with the thanks of the staff and friends, compared to most in SL that is.

Wurlitzer: Who are the staff involved with BareRose & what are their roles?

Serenity: We have a diverse staff of about 50 people now; from all over the world and we try to make sure we specialize in offering different language support. Naming them all would be difficult so I'll tell you the different staff roles. We have the General Managers (GMs) who are 2nd in command to June (who is obviously the owner and creator). We have the Managers who take care of higher responsibility tasks, like myself I'm the head of the Furry affairs/issues, each manager has their own special tasks. We have Assistant Managers who of course assist the managers in various tasks. We have the basic staff that do most of our customer service on the spot at the store, they're usually the ones you see when you arrive. And finally we have trainees who are training to be staff; they usually have a 30 day training period before becoming staff.

Wurlitzer: What made you decide to market BareRose?

Serenity: June said she wanted to make clothes that everyone can enjoy.

Wurlitzer: What was your first customer experience for BareRose SL like?

Serenity: It's hard to remember my first customer I helped in BareRose because mostly people just ask where the sections were, what new releases are, can you model this outfit, etc. I think my first go at it was walking someone over to the Women’s Japanese section.

Wurlitzer: What were your desires for joining Second Life?

Serenity: June didn't say what hers were probably curiosity like myself. I remember seeing SL featured at a Furry Convention RL and thought it was interesting, I mean a virtual world seemed just amazing on its own.

Wurlitzer: What are some of the inspirations that BareRose has to offer?

Serenity: Well our sections for men and women in the store are Gothic, Japanese, Casual, Cyber, and Fantasy. But the Women’s section features a special Dress, Cosplay, and Sexy section as well. We have almost something for everyone to enjoy here.

Wurlitzer: What are the price ranges for the items that BareRose carries?

Serenity: Almost everything is L$200 or under, most of the outfits are L$150 and under, most accessories are L$100 and under, but the avatars and some buildings are L$200.

Wurlitzer: What are some of the issues that you've faced with BareRose?

Serenity: June's major issues have been delivery trouble, viewer issues, lost items, sometimes trouble with Linden contact/service, and copy bots. There's also the occasional griefer/trouble maker but not that often since we have build/scripts/push/voice turned off on the Sims.

Wurlitzer: What are your favorite ways of promoting BareRose?

Serenity: I think June's favorite way is just providing something for everyone through her outfits at fair prices. We're also known to hold events, provide special things like sandbox and update group for our VIP and a decent amount of charity work as well. Myself, I'm involved as the head of Furry affairs/issues so I work with places like Luskwood, FurNation, Furry Japan, etc. We try to collaborate with other places when we can or when they ask.

Wurlitzer: Who decided on the name BareRose and how did that come about?

Serenity: June decided that BareRose has a double meaning. It could mean thorn-less rose and/or naked rose. It sounds innocent, sexy, and just has a good ring to it.

Wurlitzer: Which outfits at BareRose are most popular for avatars?

Serenity: It's really hard to say with the diverse customer base that we service. When you have something for everyone it's difficult to say what's most popular.

Wurlitzer: Who designs most of the clothing for BareRose?

Serenity: June is the sole designer and creator for BareRose. She sometimes takes suggestions like if you wanted a jester outfit and we didn't have it, June would probably try to design one for future sale.

Wurlitzer: Has any customers requested any fashions for BareRose, and what are a few inspired ideas that customers have asked for?

Serenity: June says half of the items are from requests, like fantasy knights, taxi drivers, etc. Sometimes June gets sent images from the people of what they want but June usually tries to make her own thing based off the background or history with a request, though due to copyright she won't outright make an outfit as seen from a picture. A lot of people are not happy that she won't copy the outfit from the picture but June is happy to make something new and different regardless.

Wurlitzer: Tell us about a situation and the steps you took to respond to a specific customer complaint. How did the customer react? Was the customer satisfied?

Serenity: June works customer support almost everyday, so far this year she only took about 5 days off from taking care of them. Most of the customers react in a friendly manner to being helped but others (for example people that one a custom item made just for them) just cannot be satisfied sometimes. We also have issues with the rules we have on our Sims like some customers will argue when we ask them, for example we ask for no nudity and no role playing while in the store. Or sometimes customers get bored of their outfit and want a refund. Overall we have many issues that sometimes there's not always an easy fix.

Wurlitzer: What are some groups that members can join regarding BareRose?

Serenity: Our main group is BareRose VIP which is run by the store. VIP also gets special privileges like the VIP Sandbox, and the VIP cafe called Kyande Koneko. Along the way others have made fan groups based on BareRose though that you can find in the search like B@R Ronin (for C:SI people who like BareRose), B@R Official Fan Club in NaviSL-SNS (a Japanese fan club for BareRose), I also see some fan groups like French, Fairies, Otaku, Neko, etc. who love BareRose as well.

Wurlitzer: How many members would are active in the BareRose groups?

Serenity: We're over 2,500 VIP members who get special privileges as I mentioned before.

Wurlitzer: How many times do you hold special group events for BareRose?

Serenity: We have events every week just like general themed parties with prizes and usually a special item made for attending that event. We also have more specialized monthly events like Elegant Gothic Lolita and Furry events which you get a special outfit for attending. Then when big holidays occur like Christmas or our Anniversary we have multiple concerts, events, treasure hunts, etc.

Wurlitzer: Does BareRose have any sponsors?

Serenity: No, but we have helped sponsor events in like clubs or other groups we work with.

Wurlitzer: What are some of your goals for BareRose for the future?

Serenity: For June she says if BareRose can be a place to make people happy or help them find what they would like, then that's our goal.

Wurlitzer: If you weren’t involved with BareRose, what you have been doing?

Serenity: I would probably take care of a group I run that aids in hunting out various funs, low cost things in SL. Because when I first started there wasn’t much for me to do or get help, so I made a group that tries to help out with that and they're a very good group of helpful friends.

Wurlitzer: What do you like to do in your spare time in SL away from BareRose?

Serenity: June said she likes to go shopping, read books, or watch movies. Myself, I mostly just shop and help out my group.

Wurlitzer: How do you see the future of Second Life to be?

Serenity: I think it will hopefully just keep expanding and growing more and more, just hope Linden Labs can keep up with it all.

Wurlitzer: Where do you see BareRose 6 months from now?

Serenity: June said we're waiting for the Class 6 sim to be created & released so we can have a smoother lag free store. We don't have much lag trouble on the other 2 Sims but our HQ is very busy and the current sim level has troubles keeping up with it. Right now were focusing on continuing to create outfits and hold events.

Wurlitzer: What would you like to be known for in Second Life?

Serenity: I think June would just be liked as a giving person who tries to make people happy, that's usually how most of us see her. Personally I would like to be known for the same thing.

Wurlitzer: Do you have any favorite advice you would like to share w/ the audience?

Serenity: June usually has really insightful advice if you knew her like we do. Personally audience I think you should be proud to be yourself and wear what you want, not what others may try to influence you to go for - and at BareRose we hope to bring out you in the best way we can.

Wurlitzer: Has BareRose ever been affected by content theft?

Serenity: We have at least one pop up every month from texture stealing/ripping to copy bots, apparently some of June's stuff has also been stolen/copied on other grids too.
