Friday Night Talkshow: Kirk Claymore & Maddox Dupont Transcripts
What is KMADD?
KC: KMADD is the name for a conglomerate of several businesses under the umbrella of KMADD Enterprise. It was conceptualised in March of 2007 under the foundation of existing businesses of Maddox such as MADesigns and MAD Studio and was officially launched on October of 2007.
MD: KMADD Enterprise consists of MADesigns (which is product based brand for shapes, eyes, textures and whatever we decide to produce and sell in the future), and then you have more service oriented businesses like MAD Modelling Agency which is a high end fashion house focused on elaborate and immersive fashion shows entirely tailored to the clients needs. We also own MAD Studio Photography & MAD Image Consultancy that provide a complete makeover and fashion advice, mostly for male.
KC: Maddox and I are both lovers of art in real and second lives which led to the creation of KMADD Centre for Arts. Its sole purpose is to provide exposure and support to the affluent SL and RL artist community. The gallery promises to be cultural center where designers and creators alike can come together in celebration of the unique experience that is Second Life.
MD: Finally our dream was also to have a shopping district with some of our favourite designers. This is how the idea for the home of KMADD Enterprise was born which is known as KMADD City today, which is predominantly a male fashion sim with boutique style stores with over 60 quality designers for men.
KC: So basically anything that is produced by me and Maddox is KMADD. The name KMADD is a combination of Kirk and Maddox. It was a joke we made initially when ‘hybrid’ terms like Brangelina and Bennifer were all over the press. We liked the sound of it so we kept it.
What inspired you to create KMADD Enterprise?
KC: We saw the need to improve the sense of style among men in Second Life. A year or two ago, there were very few designers who were willing to create clothes and accessories for men. Maddox and I believed that by incorporating our shape, photography, modelling, advertising, and image businesses, we’ll be able to put an awareness to the whole community to further improve mens fashion in Second Life.
MD: Second Life would be dead without it’s community and it’s content creators. People that know of KMADD and how we do business as well as how we entertain would know of our commitment to the quality, good customer service/hosting and community spirit. We are inclusive not exclusive and manage to stay drama free.
We combined all of these when we developed our Enterprise.
It is also about making a difference. Our shapes have been changing lives of our customers encouraging them to invest more in their appearance, as let’s face it you feel good when you look good. We knew that this in turn would encourage customers to be more fashion conscious so since we did not need an entire sim to ourselves we decided to make it a fashion city dedicated entirely to men.
KC: We wanted to help designers by giving them more visibility and help the customers get in touch with high quality fashion without having to teleport to 10 different sims to sample it.
Where is KMADD City located?
KC: KMADD City is located in the KMADD Enterprise sim. You may search KMADD Enterprise in the classifieds or places in world and it will come up.
How long did it take to create KMADD Enterprise?
MD: Well let me see MAD Studio came first, then MADesigns Shapes. Then we had KMADD Advertising which we never had enough of time for, followed by MAD Agency, KMADD city, MAD Image and KMADD Centre for Arts.
KC: KMADD Enterprise does not stop here. We never stop learning and creating new ways to improve KMADD. We do plan to venture out in other kinds businesses for which I cannot disclose at this point.
What are some of the inspirations that inspired the various designs, such as shapes and other fashions, for KMADD Enterprise?
MD: When I first started making shapes it was about building your collection you know making different types: your blonds, masculine men, young guys, old, dark, tall, then it became about fashion, about designers and looks.
KC: Today as many attempt to do the same in their presentation of the shapes we moved towards diversity and originality which are the main strengths of our products. We developed several collections such as the popular International Men series which features men of all colors, owing to the fact that SL is populated by people from all over the world.
MD: When you have 300 + shapes you know that somewhere you probably covered it and if not your customers will tell you.
I actually love when some of my regulars challenge me to make something that they want but is not already in the store. I still remember this client who came to me begging me to make her a ballerina shape. She knew what she wanted but she did not know how. It took her 8 months of persistence but in the end she finally got her ballerina out of me and I even told her where to buy poses for it.
MD: My point is sometimes inspiration is a challenge sometimes passion and sometime just plain business necessity. Whatever the challenge we welcome it.
Who owns what percentage of KMADD Enterprises?
MD: We are both equal owners of KMADD Enterprise.
KC: And we don’t have any pre-nup agreements or anything. lol
Is KMADD Enterprises your only company creation in SL?
KC: Yes it is.
What makes KMADD Enterprises KMADD City different than most any other malls/shopping companies in Second Life?
MD: Well think about how it is shopping in the malls in Real Life or Second Life. Most stores in the mall are focussed on value and common tastes in fashion and style.
We of course wanted something quite different. A year or two ago men didn’t have much stuff around to choose from and you had to go through a tedious task of travelling all over the grid to get some serious shopping done. That gave us an inspiration to create a shopping district dedicated solely to men’s fashion. Our goals were to provide the convenience of a one-stop shop and to bring awareness to men’s style and fashion, which was lacking in Second Life that time.
KC: We approached some of the best designers in SL and we were met with favourable responses. In a matter of weeks, designers such as Redgrave, Casa Del Shai, Paper Couture, Muism, Moderno and many other upscale stores specializing in chic men’s clothing and accessories had opened up their branches at KMADD. The whole project was a success and continues to draw SL citizens who want to turn themselves into more fashion-conscious people. Some of these designers have branches in KMADD City only and not anywhere else.
MD: We also wanted good looking stores, boutiques of sorts where you did not have an entire collection of one designer crammed in unbearably small store, but just a taste of their brand, a good selection of items that made you crave for more.
Also to avoid association to the mall we named the place KMADD City. So we gave it a river, a gallery, an entertainment centre, even park, Atilleri is building us 50s dinner which would be her boutique so it will have everything that good city has while being the centre for fashion, events and good shopping.
KC: KMADD now has added more designers after its expansion 2 weeks ago. We are glad to include several up and coming designers to our sim. We are totalling 65 stores at the moment. Its shopping heaven for guys.
What made you decide to market KMADD Enterprises?
My marketing and advertising background was helpful in developing ways to promote KMADD, aside from Maddox expertise in graphics of course. When I met Maddox, we decided to get more aggressive business-wise by expanding and revitalizing the brand with his existing business such as MADesigns and MAD Studio. With that, I applied the same marketing principles as I would in a real life brand.
I’m a huge fan of Ogilvy, he is the creative king of the advertising world. He once said, “When I write an advertisement, I don’t want you to tell me that you find it creative, I want you to find it so interesting that you would buy the product”. And he goes on to say, “ In this modern world of business, it is useless to be creative, unless you can sell what you create”. Basically, this is the principle I follow.
A well-conceived brand development strategy works well for your customers to stay loyal to your product. On the other hand, a quality product ensures that your customers are satisfied. Maddox and I never cease to learn, experience and discover new ways to develop and promote our business. We want to stay competitive, well informed and our customers happy.
MD: MAD Agency and the wonderful work of Risa Bright our manager and team of models have helped draw attention to KMADD as well. The Agency has attracted the press and fashion lovers who would wonder after the show to have a look at what we do and that has worked really well for us.
What are your favourite ways of promoting KMADD?
KC: I must say, creating advertising campaigns, such as print ads. Recently I did one with Turlututu Chaffe who photographed the ad that featured 7 different shapes from our International Men Collection. It was a hit and it considerably increased our sales. It feels good to be able to apply your real life skills to second life. And yes, I love networking. KMADD is also promoted via blogs, interviews, flickr and forums.
MD: I think it would be the events.
We both work very hard and when we get the chance to relax we like to relax in company of friends and treat them to something spectacular. Our events are always over the top in terms of entertainment, set and company. They are so much fun and always well attended.
What are some of your favourite stores to visit at Kmadd Enterprise?
MD: Now there are so many but I will drop some names: AITUI, Valiant, AC Store, MUISM, Argrace, Sey, Amodica and Sweetest goodbye. There are so many that I love but those are some great looking stores with great selection of items that you can visit.
KC: I love all of them. That’s the reason why they’re all here.
How do you go about creating your shapes for MADesigns?
MD: It really depends. I only have formula for processing of once completed shape what gets me there is another story. I can be inspired by the shape or by the style for which I make the shape for. It changes. Kirk?
KC: Its like cooking, you mix the right ingredients until you reach to a point that its good. In shape making, you combine hair, skin, eyes and clothes until you produce something that is quite unique and pleasing to the eyes.
Whats Kmadd Enterprise's policy regarding the 100% satisfaction Guarantee.
MD: Ahh you did your research. Well shapes are highly individual thing. And as much as we may think that they will match everyone’s tastes perfectly that is not always possible. Our 100% satisfaction guarantee has several levels. First, we guarantee that you will look exactly as pictured, that should be given as that is what you sell. We are also there for our customers that need the adjustment made or have bought the shape but are not following the styling card so they want shape adjusted to the skin they like wearing. We want customers happy with their purchase and will do anything to ensure they are happy, within reason of course.
What are your future plans for Kmadd Enterprise?
MD: Completion of KMADD City. Launch of web presence & MAD Image. MAD Agency Modelling School is in the planning stages. Invigorate MAD Studio as it has been closed for business for quite some time now due to time constraints. You will see young talent emerging from MAD Studio and few prominent photographers working for us.
KC: Create more shapes, host more events, discover new designers, continue to feature art shows for KMADD Centre for Arts. You will also see new products emerging from MADesigns.
How many models are currently involved with Kmadd Enterprise?
KC: About 70
How do you get the models to participate?
KC: We do casting calls.
What are some groups that members can join regarding Kmadd Enterprise?
MD: There is only one group open to public and that is KMADD Enterprise. There are 2 ways to join, via groups and via subscribeommatics. The first is preferable method as we do not post everything via other means.
What kind of exclusive membership perks do you get for joining the various KMADD Enterprises group?
KC: There are many, such as VIP events, freebees, special offers, great finds and fashion advice.
How many members would you say are active in the groups?
KC: About 3000 members from both subscribe a matic and kmadd enterprise group.
How many times do you hold special group events for KMADD Enterprises?
KC: It depends on the demand from designers requesting to do a show with us. Also, we host personal events such as rezzdays, anniversaries, etc that are open to both VIPs and public from time to time.
You also have KMADD City....What are some of the various stores one can find?
MD: We have everything from well known brands to brands that we love but are not well known and still produce some excellent stuff. We got everything from formal to urban clothing, accessories, shoes, jewellery, even poses and you may stumble on occasional car or motorbike parked in some alley.
How does somebody become a vendor for KMADD City and what’s the process?
KC: Like I said earlier, we approached these designers and invited them to open a store in our sim. Sometimes a designer would approach us, and if their designs meet our standards we would welcome them to KMADD City.
Does KMADD Enterprises have any sponsors?
KC: Our real life bank accounts? Lol.
MD: No but MAD Agency does. Once every couple of months we would do a group show and we would look for sponsors for these events.
What are some of your goals for KMADD Enterprise for the future?
MD: Great shows, great shopping and great community.
KC: Another sim, more designers, more shapes, more friends and supporters…
How do you keep transparency in making sure who you are in RL becomes the same for KMADD Enterprises?
KC: KMADD Enterprise is a reflection of our values and skills in our real lives.
If you weren’t involved with KMADD Enterprise, what do you think you would be doing,?
MD: Renting a store there?
KC: I’ll probably be out of the game.
How did u both meet, do you keep in touch outside of SL and are you both involved in the same RL industry as your are in SL?
MD: We are on voice in Second Life and have plans to see each other in November.
KC: I am marketing executive while Maddox is a manager in telecommunications.
What do you like to do in your spare time in SL away from KMADD Enterprise?
MD: Go exploring, shopping and partying with friends.
KC: Surfing and scuba diving in Costa Rica where we currently live.
Are there any funny stories you can share about some customers looking towards you for avatar advice?
MD: I had a person asking me to make her a she-male. That was in early days of MADesigns female collection. I said honey: “Look at that wall they are already”
Few months after when a customer complimented my female shapes by saying: “I love your shapes. They make great she-males.” I thanked her and decided it was time to review my collection. I do not think she shops there anymore, I am kidding.
KC: One guy asked me if I could make a Brad Pitt shape for him.
How do you see the future of Second life to be?
MD: When I first time started playing the game, there was no voice, no windlight, no sculpties. This just tells you how far we got in such a short time. I believe that sound will improve, lag might as well, we should have shadows soon and different viewers that will change our experience of the game. Who knows, I rather wait and see.
KC: More residents, better customer service, a translation program so we can better understand our non-English speaking friends…
