Friday Night Talkshow: Miami Fusion 2009 Transcripts (02/27/09)

To Be Announced...

[Xochi Tolsen, CEO/Founder of Studio Red]

[Producer of Miami Fusion]

Wurlitzer: As the owner of Studio Red, can you tell us a little about the company and how you came to be involved in the production of Miami Fusion?

Xochi: Founded in January of 2008, Studio Red began as idea for a party for group of friends and had since grown to become one the most recognized producers of Second Life events. Our events are typically multi-sim events featuring some of the best live DJs. Most all events are themed and offer a truly unique experience for SL residents. In November 2008, we were approached by Mlita Pennell, Mimi Juneau and Dean Ashby to produce a large festival of fashion of music. After initial discussions, we decided to take on the project.

Wurlitzer: Is this the first large scale event that you have produced?

Xochi: No. Studio Red is known for producing large scale events that last for up to 6 hours and cover multiple sims. Some of our past events include Playing with Fire, the Ultimate Daft Punk Party, In Darkness, the Make-a-Wish Celebrity Auction and Nuit Blanche. Of course we have Miami Fusion on March 1 and several large events to follow including the Relay for Life kick-off party and Mr. Virtual World which we are producing in conjunction with Best of SL/Frolic Mills.

Wurlitzer: How was the theme picked for the event?

Xochi: From the beginning of the project, we knew that the goal was to show the synergies between fashion and music. The Redgrave sims, Deep House Island and House Music Island are all designed to be reflective of Miami, from the building style to the layout. When we began the initial scoping of the event, we took this into consideration along with the fact that Miami is known for flair and fashion. After listening to what Dean’s vision was for the event, we came up with Miami Fusion 2009.

Wurlitzer:How long has it taken to develop Miami Fusion 2009?

Xochi: Event development began in November of 2008 so approximately 4 months.

Wurlitzer:Were there any setbacks during the development?

Xochi: As with any large project, there are always minor setbacks that a project team has to deal with. Fortunately, with Miami Fusion, we had an incredible project team and the setbacks were easily overcome.

Wurlitzer: Please give us an overview of performances and activities for the event.

Xochi: Miami Fusion has an incredible roster of live vocalists and performers. Live vocalists include Reis Alter, a world-renowned RL Brazilian vocalist and Jonas Lunasea who is a very popular SL artist. Live DJs include DJ Gogo Dreadlow (spinning a house set), Devee Voom (RL London-based DJ spinning a house/deep house set), Kromus Korobase (RL US-based DJ spinning a house/deep house set) and Azu Catteneo (one of the most popular DJs in SL performing a Latin set). In addition, we have a Bryan Adams cover performance by Cutting Edge Concerts.

Wurlitzer: Are there going to be any contests or giveaways?

Xochi: Yes! On Sunday only there is a treasure hunt where participating fashion designers and content creators will have hidden free items in their stores. In addition, Miami Fusion staff will be handing out a large volume of prizes throughout the day.

Wurlitzer: What else can we expect at the event?

Xochi: In addition to the live performers, Miami Fusion will feature three fashion shows produced by MAD Agency. The fashion shows will feature the resident fashion and accessory designers of Redgrave sims, Deep House Island and House Music Island.

Wurlitzer: Are there going to be any other fusion events?

Xochi: Depending on success of this event, there is definitely the potential for a Miami Fusion 2010.

[Dean Ashby - Owner of Deep House Island, House Music Island, Truehouse (house music club]

[Host of Miami Fusion]

Wurlitzer: Dean, The Miami Fusion event was your idea, how did Miami Fusion get started?

Dean: Mimi approached me and wanted to have a party to promote her stores. My reaction was to throw an entire festival that blended fashion and music. My sims are home to some very talented fashion designers, music producers and content creators, and I wanted to create an opportunity to showcase their amazing work here. Miami Fusion seemed the perfect opportunity.

Wurlitzer: What's your inspiration for the event?

Dean: First and foremost I have a passion for music of all kinds but especially for house music. Second to that is my passion for fashion. Because in RL the two are often intertwined, I wanted to bring that to SL. I wanted to produce a festival reflective of what a RL celebration in Miami would be like.

Wurlitzer: What is your history is SL in terms of fashion and music?

Dean: Sands, a house house club featuring some of SLs best live mix DJs and also first and only club to bring the 2 biggest dance labels (Hed Kandi & Defected) into Second Life, was my first foray into music in Second Life. Now, I own Truehouse which is located on House Music Island. From the fashion side, my other half is Emilia Redgrave so I better have an interest in fashion! I often find myself modeling her latest creations.

Wurlitzer: Did you purchase the sims strictly for this event, if not how did it come to be hosted on your sims?

Dean: No. I owned the sims prior to the event. The sims are part commercial, part residential.

Wurlitzer: What made you come up with the idea to hire a promoter for this event?

Dean: If you think about an event with 400+ people theres a lot of work involved. Organizing, scheduling, chats and so on .. so we got Studio Red to help us as we thought that it is the only event agency in SL that could handle such an event.

Wurlitzer: What are your expectations for the event?

Dean: To be honest ...I have none ;-) As long people enjoy our event I'm fine... thats how my SL worked for me from day 1 ...

[Mimi Juneau, Owner of Mimi's Choice, 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year]

[Miami Fusion 2009 Event Host]

Wurlitzer: Mimi, As the owner of Mimi's Choice, and the 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year award, you obviously have a deep involvement in fashion. Can you tell us about Mimi's Choice and how you came to be involved with Miami Fusion?

Mimi: Mimi's Choice is a reseller of fashion designs and accessories. I have always loved fashion and even more so loved taking the designs of others and using them to create new and exciting outfits. I hand pick each item sold at Mimi's Choice and during the process, become very familiar with the different designers and styles available. Late last year, I asked Dean if I could host an event to promote my stores and Dean's response was to say we could have an entire festival and Miami Fusion was born.

Wurlitzer: In your view, what is the connection between fashion and music?

Mimi: They both compliment each other beautifully, both express a creativity and form of art. They also both express cultural diversity which is essential to second life, and society as a whole, because lets face it - the world would be boring without them!Great ideas don't always make great designs in fashion, or music, so it must mean the taking part is what really counts, to express oneself.

Wurlitzer: Please tell us about some of the fashion designers participating in the event.

Mimi: Redgrave, Mimi's Choice, Jador, Calico Ingmann Creations, GADore, K-Design Jewelry, Alphamale & Blacklace, Beconcept Furniture, 2Xtreme Furniture, Anubis Style, Bax Coen, Clio Cardiff Creations, ORAGE Creations, M.R.M., Zeb&Sly Model Poses, Atelier Bonetto, SF Designs, Sartoria, Banus Beach Furniture, AKEYO Flagstores and GBTM.

Wurlitzer: I understand there are three fashion shows during the festival. Can you tell us a little bit about those?

Mimi: The fashion shows are being produced by MAD Agency. We have a beautiful runway built by Rawly Rousselot that is inspired by art-deco hotels in Miami. The shows feature the designs of content creators on the Redgrave, House Music Island and Deep House Island sims.

Wurlitzer:Will Miami Fusion guests receive gifts and or surprises for attending the event?

Mimi: We are hosting a treasure hunt and participating designers have placed free gifts in their stores. We will also be handing out random prizes throughout the event.

[DJ Azufr3 Catteneo: Professional DJ/Model]

[DJ for Miami Fusion 2009]

Wurlitzer: Azu, You are a renowned DJ in SL, what is your inspiration for music and how have you become successful as a DJ?

DJ Azu: Thank you, I am inspired by a lot of the different beats I grew up listening to, from typical folk Colombian music to The first Ricky Martin tracks and so on. I think that this fusion of styles and being curious have helped a lot with everything I have done as far as the mixing, the style and the producing.

Wurlitzer: Why did you agree to participate in Miami Fusion?

DJ Azu: Many reasons, one, I am a huge fan of all the big Studio Red events, they surely know how to party. also, because I felt this would be a huge opportunity to expose people to diversity, to the diversity of music and the fact that "Latin" doesn't just mean Salsa.

Wurlitzer: What type of set will you be performing during Miami Fusion?

DJ Azu: It's going to be a huge mix that I wanted to put together since last year, as in all my crazy sets, we are going to be in a roller coaster ride that will feature, salsa, meringue, Latin house, Latin electro,

reggae ton and tribal.

Wurlitzer: You are also a model for MAD Agency, do you think that the music and the fashion compliment the atmosphere for this event or are they each their own element?

DJ Azu: They are different elements but they do compliment each other, I think it's great when you get to see expression not just audibly but also visually.

Wurlitzer: Have you ever worked on a large scale event such as this before?

DJ Azu: I think every time I work on a big scale event it's with Studio Red and they just keep evolving and making it bigger and better so, this is the biggest :)
