Friday Night Transcripts: Jan30th 2009: Rysan Fall/Fall Films
Wurlitzer: What exactly is machinima?
Rysan: Machinima is the official name for filming in a digital environment….its computer generated imagery (CGI) using interactive 3D engines instead of professional 3D animation software. The word machinima comes from the words “machine cinema”
Wurlitzer: What's the mission and story behind Fall Films?
Rysan: I have only been making machinima since February 2008. I got the idea to do it because I am novice video editor in real life and I thought Second Life would be a great place to practice shooting some scenes and brush up on my editing techniques then applying that to real world. I really never expected to continue making machinima. But the response to my work was overwhelming and business aspects were just too much for me to turn my back on.
Wurlitzer: Have you been influenced by other various machinima avatars? if so, how and why?
Rysan: There are many many machinimators out there….and I have seen so many videos made by others theres is a lot of great talent out there. But honestly I have to say the piece that has affected me the most is a video called “The Dumb Man” made by Lainy Voom. Just an incredible piece...you really have to check it on YouTube.com.
Wurlitzer: Does Fall Films offer any training classes on machinima, if not, would you be interested in creating such a class?
Rysan: No. Not at the moment. But I am always willing to help anyone who had questions on how to do something. You'll find a lot machinimators are willing to help. If I had time in the future I would be interested in creating a class about machinima. In fact a friend of mine who is a professor of African American lit and visual culture at a small university in the Midwest US...is using a project I am working on for extra credit for his students in a couple of his classes. He teaches cyber-culture and composition courses within SL.
Wurlitzer: Who are some customers that you have worked with previously in SL and how did they go approaching you?
Rysan: Oh man... I've worked with a few companies in SL, like... PhotoLife, Mayhem Weapons, DAB Modeling, Femalemusician.com, Love Story Weddings complete numerous wedding videos... and I list of others I have still yet to complete. Usually its word of mouth that gets me the most customers..... and YouTube has been a great form of advertisement. Most of my work is wedding videos.
Wurlitzer: Who are the staff involved with Fall Films and what are their roles?
Rysan: Well up until recently I have been doing everything myself. My parter Tasmin Devin has helped me film as my 2nd camera for the last couple of projects and her help has been greatly appreciated. Because for the last year I had been doing all the filming, editing, and directing.
Wurlitzer: Have there been any press releases or reviews written about Fall Films?
Rysan: Theres was one on someones SL news page mentioning my work on the video that played at a cutting concert. And I believe something is coming out in the SLenquirer.com after this show.
Wurlitzer: How many machinima videos have you completed and what was your first customer experience like?
Rysan: I completed 25 videos last year. My first customer experience was with a woman that wanted to make a video for her boyfriend as a present. She wanted it done to the song " Number one crush" by Garbage...and every since then I have been working non stop. They met in real life and are still together today.
Wurlitzer: What are some reasons why a somebody would want to consider having their business in SL feature machinima?
Rysan: Video is a great means of promotion and advertisement of course. The reasons are many. a lot of business in SL have websites and a video of their services looks great on their page. I even did a video for a company to play behind a band on stage.
Wurlitzer: Where is the main location for Fall Films?
Rysan: I have a film lot and an office about 700 meters above my home on Devinfall Island.
Wurlitzer: What is one common element that you like to include in each of your videos?
Rysan: I try include a little piece of reality in every one of my videos. Although it may not be readily seen, its there. It could be anything...the sky ...a picture...a tree. But its not always enough to notice. I believe I only have a couple videos without it. But I don't believe machinimators should rely too much on reality in their videos. Could be used as a crutch.
Wurlitzer: What's some of your favorite machinima that you've seen in SL that is NOT yours and why?
Rysan: Once again I have to mention “The Dumb Man” made by Lainy Voom. Everything about it was done perfect.... the editing, the narration, the imagery. In a way I compare all my work to it.
Wurlitzer: Who should you contact for more information on Fall Films?
Rysan: That would be either myself or Tasmin Devin.
Wurlitzer: How much does it cost to have Fall Films promote your business?
Rysan: We have completed updating my wedding video price list. But for a business every job is different. I don't want to quote a price and have it in stone when those jobs vary still. Jobs range from 15k - 35k Linden.
Wurlitzer: What are your favorite ways of promoting Fall Films?
Rysan: I really haven't had to.
Wurlitzer: What are your future plans regarding Fall Films?
Rysan: Just to continue what I'm doing now ....finding new projects where machinima could be used.
I would love to do videos for RL bands that are in Second Life.
Wurlitzer: What are some groups that members can join regarding Fall Films?
Rysan: Well they could join my group.....Fall Films.
Wurlitzer: Does Fall Films have any sponsors?
Rysan: No .not as of yet.....
Wurlitzer: What are some your goals for the future of Fall Films?
Rysan: I would like to be able to use my machinima for more real world advertising. Machinima is beginning to break out of the underground community of gamers and is becoming more widely recognized by mainstream audiences. I would also like to reach out to other machinimators and possibly collaborate on some projects.
Wurlitzer: If you weren’t involved with Fall Films, what would you have been doing?
Rysan: I have no idea..... I cant imagine doing anything else out here. I love machinima.
Wurlitzer: What do you like to do in your spare time in SL away from Fall Films?
Rysan: What spare time away from fall films? Kidding.... I do a little graphic design for hip hop artists in RL and I do some voice over work.
Wurlitzer: Where do you see Fall Films 6 months from now?
Rysan: I hope Fall Films to be one of the most recognized Film companies in second life. With packages for people who may not have much linden. I want to continue providing customers with quality work.
Wurlitzer: What would you like Fall Films to be known for in Second Life?
Rysan: I would like Fall Films to be known as the company that produces some of the finest videos in second life.
Wurlitzer: What would YOU like to be known for in Second Life?
Rysan:As the guy that created the company that produces some of the finest videos in second life.
Wurlitzer: Whats your avatar history in Second Life?
Rysan: I went from a homeless camper....to a host at a club....to graphic design artist/ part time CCS vampire hunter, LOL....to Video producer
Wurlitzer: What were your desires for joining Second Life?
Rysan: I joined SL just to check it out.... I never intended on staying this long, really. I was walking through the room one day and CNN was on the TV talking about an unfortunate news story where there was a pedophile island in second life called "Wonderland" and that SL have to shut it down due to adult avatars where having simulated sex with child avatars. So after that I typed in Second Life on Google....with a desire to check out what it was. Because before that I never knew it existed. That was little over a year ago. At first I thought SL was stupid but then it obviously grew on me.
Wurlitzer: How do you see the future of Second Life to be?
Rysan: Well I no longer think SL is stupid.... I see it as being a a brilliant social experiment where people can communicate and interact with people they normally wouldn't be able to in real life. I see SL as expanding...becoming even bigger than it is today. SL has limitless applications live music performances... people doing business spanning multiple continents to universities holding classes. I really do see SL as being the future of how people interact on the Internet. I love it and I am happy I joined.
