Friday Night Talkshow: 03/06/09 Transcripts: Frolic Mills/
Friday Night Talkshow: Miami Fusion 2009 Transcripts (02/27/09)
Wurlitzer: What's your avatars history been like in Second Life, Sonia?
Sonia: After over a year and half, My avatar had rather a simple history.. no extremes just lots of learning and building meeting people and getting new friends everyday.. even go dancing... the fun part of Second life and of course the opportunity of being creative
Wurlitzer: What is Son!a and how did you get involved with the store?
Sonia: Son!a is my brand name or label if you might say and it is my dearest creation.. my baby, a lot of energy and time and even love were put in my designs
Wurlitzer: Where is Son!a located?
Sonia: In Luxury Isle
Wurlitzer: How long did it take to create Son!a?
Sonia: It took almost 6 months.. during this time i was getting to learn how to do things
building and texturing attending classes , looking for tutorials on websites when i felt i have a decent amount of designs having a store and a place to present them was a natural process
Wurlitzer: Are there staff involved with Son!a, & what are their roles?
Sonia: Actually no staffs involved at all, Just myself... I hire models from time to time to add a fresh look to the store and vendors
Wurlitzer: What made you decide to call your store Son!a?
Sonia: Related to my RL & SL name with a twist, it wasn't a new idea I've been writing my name this way since i was in high school and when i went to fashion school it was my signature on all my projects and designs.. and Always caught other's attention
Wurlitzer: How did you get started in business in Second Life?
Sonia: Honestly I don't know much about business but i love fashion.. I started making jewelry for my self and some clothing and my friends used to like them.. So it was something waiting to happen, i waited till i had a good amount of items in my inventory worth selling and i got myself a 512 x 512 sq meters land.. and i built my first store. It was really rewarding I had after that some regular clients and from there i moved to bigger lands typically moving up step by step no huge jumps
Wurlitzer: What were your desires for joining Second Life?
Sonia: It is a funny Story actually before 5th June 2007 (my rezday) i didn't know there is such thing as Second life, the reason i joined Second life? I was surfing the web i saw a contest for fashion design, and since i was recently a young fashion designer graduate in RL i thought this contest was in RL *duh* and I wanted to be part of it .. i even started making some sketches till i noticed "second life " repeating many times and other designers' designs had something in common.. so i Google Second life and i downloaded it.. like everybody else i was a noob on orientation island and still i just loved it ...spent hours there just fixing my appearance made a long yellow noobish hair and even sent a card (snapshot) to my friend's email
Wurlitzer: What are some of the inspirations that inspired the various items you feature at Son!a?
Sonia: Part of my RL work to do research about all RL fashion trends it has a big effect on my designs or my collections.. might be colors , cuts or silhouettes.. It is easy to explain it this way though we all know in SL defies all RL clothing rules.. and the dress or garment becomes no more an item to put on an avatar it becomes artistic work.. some good items don't need to be trendy to look good, we all know the challenge in SL to look as real as possible so i can frankly say that my first and only inspiration is RL, how the fabrics drape around a body, types of how different fabrics react when worn from sheer, to satin, to leather and how skirts flow and fall over the body same for jewelry design and with the increase use of sculpted prims it made it easier to create a more realistic silhouette such as puffy shirts and sleeves but still they look wonderful in photos but not as good when the av moves
Wurlitzer: Do you possess any backgrounds in the creative arts field?
Sonia: I have 2 degrees a diploma Interior design and another in fashion design.. my RL work right now tho involves only fashion design, experienced in using Auto cad, 3dsMax photo shop and illustrator.. what i can say SL helped improving this knowledge and take it to another level by learning new techniques , and even learning new softwares to make sculpties
Wurlitzer: What are the price ranges for the items that Son!a carries?
Sonia:
casual dresses 300-450$L
for formal 600-800$L
for wedding dresses 1500-1600$L
Wurlitzer: What are some of the issues that you've been facing with Son!a?
Sonia: I didn't have any issues at the beginning but as my store expanded i started feel the envy/hate from others, some merchants some well established designers.. though i am not here to compete with anybody just doing something i love to do.. something b4 SL i used to do in my spare time for fun.. I understand competition is high in SL fashion design.. same in RL we r having now same problem.. u might say simple issues that happen anywhere and to anybody some people have a lot of energy that use to put other peoples work and effort down instead of using it in a constructive way... for example i got a message few weeks ago from a seller that i don't know at all telling me that my prices are too high and was wishing me luck in my business in a sarcastic way of course .. yes just like that out of the blue
Wurlitzer: What are your favorite methods of promoting Son!a?
Sonia: I put adds in Modavia magazine very interesting graphics and team I've been with them for 5 months now and i like the way they present the dresses and attract readers
and the other way is hiring models from time to time for photo shoot.. i am actually having now a contest to pick a model for a photo shoot in April
Wurlitzer: How did you get involved with Danilia Mureaux?
Sonia: I met Dani in one of my fashion show she used to represent Silverstar fashion agency, and they offered to make a fashion show for me, Dani was one of the models and organizer of the show
Wurlitzer: Have you ever held any fashion shows for Son!a?
Sonia: Yes I was offered a lot of offers to have fashion shows and or participate with dresses on runways, I've worked with Silverstar agency and I have been featured in the GLANCE International Agency showcase and wedding fair i would participate even more if i had time..
Wurlitzer: Are any of your clothing copy/trans and if not, how come?
Sonia: all my clothing/items are copy no transfer though i give non copy transfer items in some situations for gifts purposes
Wurlitzer: What are some groups that members can join regarding the progress of Son!a?
Sonia: the group is Son!a for everybody who is interested in all the updates and releases
Wurlitzer: What do you think Son!a has to offer that is different from other SL stores?
Sonia: Regarding designs as we say in fashion industry there is nothing new under the sun.. the trick in SL is to add a personal touch to what i do.. create realistic textures do a lot of research take photos of real garment on mannequins.. after that offer a great customer service that is what i care about the most, i want to have happy customers before ,during and after their purchase.
Great customer service is all about making clients happy. enough to pass positive feedback to others
Wurlitzer: How many members would are active in the Son!a groups?
Sonia: 180 members
Wurlitzer: How many times do you hold special group events for Son!a?
Sonia: Seasonal involves Contests, job contracts, or VIP fashion shows invitations
Wurlitzer: Does Son!a have any sponsors?
Sonia: No
Wurlitzer: What are some of your goals to work on for the future of Son!a?
Sonia: To expand and have a full section devoted for weddings from dresses to jewelry and shoes for the bride bridesmaids groom and flower girls
Wurlitzer: If you weren’t involved with Son!a, what you have been doing?
Sonia: In SL if i wasn't fashion designer i would be a builder, furniture and houses
Wurlitzer: Away from working at Son!a, what do you like to do in your spare time in SL?
Sonia: I like to go to jazz clubs, dance with friends, shopping a lot and exploring like everybody else.. i am always fascinated by the amount of creativity and brilliance found in second life
Wurlitzer: How do you see the future of Second Life to be?
Sonia: In my personal opinion SL is a place that mimics RL the goal is to be as close to RL as possible.. so far we have the visual and sound and voice skins are getting more and more realistic.. clothing accessories too.. so everything is possible and as i can see a lot of residents including me are devoted to their second life and where there is devotion and passion you can make any dream come true
Wurlitzer: Where do you see Son!a 6 months from now?
Sonia: I moved recently to a bigger land and added a bigger store so i see son!a store growing and expanding as long as i love fashion design there will be always new designs from son!a and always need for a bigger place to hold them
Wurlitzer: Have you ever been affected by content theft?
Sonia: Not that i know of, mainly it is more like style copy like the lace top and satin skirt with Son!a's famous train
Wurlitzer: What would you like to be known for in Second Life?
Sonia: A trend setter
Wurlitzer: Do you have any favorite advice you would like to share w/ the audience?
Sonia: To always have fun in what they do
