Friday Night Talkshow: Annette Wilder Transcript/Interview 08-08-08
1-What is Wilder Public Relations Firm?
It is a PR Firm that I am the CEO and Founder of. It officially started as Wilder PR in Dec 2007.
2-How did Wilder Public Relations Firm get started?
It started because I worked for Rusch Raymaker, my best friend who owns AVENUE Models. I started doing PR to help her out and then Wilder PR Inc was born.
3-How much staff is involved?
There is me, my administrative assistant Mahala Bing, and my sister Angelique Ronmark who is our resident Photographer who owns Studio Angel. I had a Vice President Bibe Mayo but she now owns Dorian Day Spa be sure to check it out.
4-What type of clients do you usually represent?
We have worked with an assortment of clients from sl companies to rl companies.
We do not, however, take on things such as club openings that is not our forte. Bringing traffic to clubs or malls is not something we focus on.
5-How do you go about promoting your clients?
We use all resources available we contact inworld and out of world magazines that will cater to whatever demographic our client is wanting to reach, inworld and online newspapers, SL groups that target specific markets who would be interested in what our clients have to offer, we have a connection with MBC network which is an sl tv station that we work closely with and we do alot with SL Enquirer thanks to the wonderful Lanai and all her help. We have a blog we also use to help people who are interested in what we are up to keep up with Wilder PR's events or clients.
6-What are the services you provide?
We write press releases, we help clients get interviews with media, we are a liasion between our clients and the media basically, if there are rsvp's to be done we handle those and teleport in those who have rsvp'd, we keep up with all media who we sent our press release and our follow up release out to, all things that are written about our clients we go back search and find them and write a valid summary of what media showed to the event and what media publicity was done on the event and when they will be printed. Those are the basic things we do but we do discuss additional services and fees with our clients as well.
7-Who are some of your clients?
We have worked with: AVENUE Models, EXXESS Designs, La Belle Vie Furniture, Nuclear Boutique which are all sl companies. Thanks to a connection Bibe has we worked with Stephen Venkman a famous SL artist. And for rl companies we work for Working Worlds Career inworld Job Fair and Koinup which is like a Myspace for virtual worlds. Through our work with Avenue Models we have worked with various clothing designers such as Indyra Originals, Apple May, Shakture Couture, Ravenwear and others.
8-How is Wilder Public Relations structured?
Very simply. I try to condense it as much as possible really the main contact for Wilder PR is Mahala Bing. The admin asst is the first person you will speak to and sometimes for some the only person they will speak to from Wilder. It's me, Mahala and Angelique but most of the time it's me and Mahala.
9-How has Wilder Public Relations Firm become known as one of the most well known PR agencies in SL?
I ask myself that sometimes. Due to hardwork and dedication of our present and past staff, which includes or included Bibe Mayo and Mahala Bing. I wish I could take all the credit and say due to my advertising the company and my connections but those are things that helped it start out but the dedication of the staff and the ultimate goal to please the client and really want them to come again is why Wilder has gotten the reputation that it has.
10-Is there a story behind Wilder Public Relations?
Well I worked at a club in sl when I started I was a mgr/hostess and I met Rusch Raymaker who was and still is one of the most creative and wonderful people I've met here. She had big plans for her sl and she wanted me to work with her and be her PR person. Everytime something good happens for Wilder PR I think of Rusch because she believed in my ability to do this before I even believed in me. So taking on the job for her and learning how to approach media helped me gain the confidence to know that I could do this I could own my own firm.
11-Have you had any former communication/advertisement training?
I graduated with a Bachelor's degree for Communications my emphasis is Advertising.
12-Does having a Communications/Advertising degree in RL help you out in SL?
I think my gift of gab loving to talk helps me out. People want a connection when they work with someone and trust is the biggest way to connect with someone. So gaining a potential clients trust and being a people person really helped me I think more than my rl degree.
13-Have you had any reviews written about Wilder Public Relations?
Reviews not necessarily I mean Bibe and I have been on the Paisley Beebe Show and we were asked to appear because of the job well done that people say we do. Sigmund Leominster who is a wonderful freelance writer has said great things about us here and there and everytime someone comes to us they usually can say a media person sent them or told them about us. So even without the reviews we are holding our own. We save the reviews for our clients we would much rather media write awesome reviews about them.
14-What do you do outside of SL?
I work in Newspaper and Magazine Advertising.
15-How often do you work with public relations in SL?
Well it varies I mean some weeks we log on and Mahala has over five potential new clients and we dwindle it down to meeting the one or two that we feel we could benefit with our work. We do pass up alot of companies we only work with people we can truly benefit from and they can do the same. Part of my belief is you are only as good as the product or company you are promoting.
16-Have you ever worked with anything concerning public relations outside of SL?
In Advertising you are the actual media and not the media liasion so no in the real world I'm more on the media side I mean I am my clients connection with the paper or magazine but I'm still included more into the media category rather than the public relations one.
17-You recently were asked to appear on the Paisley Beebe Show. What was that experience like for you, and how did it go?
Well Bibe and I appeared and the experience was wonderful. It is very much a real tv show and it was an honor to appear on there and know that people enjoy what we do or are curious about what we do.
18-Whats some advice you can offer us on successful advertisement in SL?
Research the tv network, magazine, blog, newspaper or whatever media you are choosing to advertise on don't be afraid to ask questions about their readership or viewership. Find out if it will benefit you by being part of it before you commit to it.
19-What are your thoughts on advertisment in SL?
I believe much like in the real world advertising is necessary. People don't want to spend the money but I've learned you have to spend money in order to make money.
20-Are there any other previous companies you worked for in SL?
Bad Girls Club Mgr and AVENUE Models
21-Are there any conflicts you’re having with other competing advertisement agencies?
Not necessarily advertisement agencies but much like rl there will always be conflicts. I've learned that when you do a job and you do it well people will have a problem with you even if they don't do the job the type of you do. Someone will always want to outdo or be better. That's a fact of life I guess.
22-What makes Wilder Public Relations standout?
I think our upfront approach to business. We don't beat around the bush we tell clients what we can do for them and we do it all with a smile. We bend over backwards to help them anyway that we can and we truly love helping them succeed it is not about us making money it is about us benefitting the client and keeping them coming back again and again. We love what we do.
23-Is there an In-World location for Wilder Public Relations?
Yes we are located at Royal Tropic Lagoon in the sky and you can tp to our location from my classifieds in my profile.
24-Is there anywhere that you can go to, to keep up to date on the progress of Wilder Public Relations?
Yes we have a blog which is http://wilderprfirminc.blogspot.com/
you can visit our blog and also go to our koinup and myspace blogs from there as well.
25-If somebody has an event that they would like to be featured who should they contact and how do you go about promoting their event?
Well we have our media list that we contact with the press release that we write. Our media list includes tv media, magazines, newspapers, blogs, and inworld groups. When we did work for Working Worlds I contacted a rl newspaper blog and Working Worlds actually got rl publicity from that and not just inworld publicity. That is not the norm but it did work out that time.
26-What are the rates for advertisement using Wilder Public Relations?
Well we have a rate sheet and if you visit our office you can pick one up. Great way to get people to tp down and check us out. What I will say is there are diff rates for sl companies and rl companies. Rl companies are charged higher fees.
27 -What some of Wilder Public Relations main goals?
Just to send our clients away satisfied. We never want to do a half job for someone we definitely want them to leave us with a sense of ROI which is return of investment. If they trust us and spend money with us we want them to leave feeling that it was money well spent.
28-How do you promote Wilder Public Relations?
I use our blog other blogs, tv commercials, advertising in various magazines, the sl classifieds, interviews such as this, and newspapers to promote us.
29-Has Wilder Public Relations ever thought about expanding into the real world?
We have been asked that and it hasn't really been a thought. I mean I'm quite content with my rl job but I would love to help rl companies come inworld and setup their companies here and get media attention. Having a rl career does not make it that easy to take on my sl career full time.
30-Have you ever held any special events to draw a bigger crowd interest Wilder Public Relations?
No we have thought about throwing a party for the company but have not gotten around to that yet.
31-What would you like your future in SL to be?
Just to expand my company in the future and do this until I no longer enjoy doing it. I think my main goal will be to hire a larger staff and be able to be less hands on with the actual work.
32-What inspired you about Wilder Public Relations?
Coming in here and having this responsibility has inspired me to just work even harder in my rl career. It has shown me the successes and the trials of owning your own company and it has shown me that I can do it and I work harder in my rl career to reach a higher plateau.
33-How do you see the future of Second life to be..will it be geared towards more education or commericalism?
I have been contacted by a computer college and I came into sl due to my college professor in my senior year in college who made us come in here to have the experience and write a journal on it. So yes I do see more education but I think commercialism will be a bigger part of the future of SL. Rl companies want to be here they just need the right PR tools to help them come in here and succeed. PR they use in the real world does not benefit them in sl you must learn the way of sl media it is not the same as rl media. This is definitely a whole new world.

Michi Lumin,
Luskwood Furry Community
TRANSCRIPTS, MICHI LUMIN
1-What can you tell us about the history on Luskwood and how many furry avatars are involved?
- Well, that's a bit of a rough one... When I first got to SL, there weren't any furry avatars... We started that whole thing, the whole idea of pasting prims onto the human av to make it into an anthropomorphic figure. There were some ideas before that, Primitar, and some Godzilla looking things, but they were pretty extreme. When Luskwood started there were about five or six furries on the grid. Now, I think that number's over 30,000.
3-Who are the founders of Luskwood?
-That'd be myself, Arito Cotton, Liam Roark and Eltee Statosky. Not neccessarily in that order.
4-Why do you feel that Luskwood is better off as a PG sim and not a mature sim?
-As a lot of people do know, there's a lot of sensationalism out there, racy stuff, not only in furry circles, but all over Second Life. We figured we'd concentrate more on community, and give it a go. It's hard to go out there and say that there are significant sections of the Furry fandom that just aren't about that sort of thing. We're into identity, and crafting an identity, and providing a place for friends to meet up.
5-How did you come up with the name Luskwood?
-Well, the sim was Lusk, thats where we got our first land. Liam was working on a model of an old fashioned wooden owl lamp to sell in our General Store. Which was gonna be kind of an old country store that sold little quaint gadgets and stuff. We were set in a forest, too. So Liam looked at the lamp and said something like, "We should call what we do Luskwood." - and, well, we went on making these kind of rustic wooden things for a few weeks and the name stuck.
6-Luskwood also has their own avatar design group called Luskwood Creatures, what is some information you can tell us about that company?
-To start, we were just making avatars for ourselves. There was a group of maybe... seven people or so who had a bit of background from the furry MUCKs, and Arito Cotton started hanging out with us. We all started working on our own avatars, helping eachother, mostly Arito, Liam, me and Eltee. We'd go to weekly "show and tells" in the Welcome area -- back then, every single event on the grid, by the way, was announced personally by a Linden... So we'd show up for show-and-tell, wearing this radically different avatar, stuff people hadn't seen before, and then they'd want one for themselves. So we started doing customs, every av was personal, made for its wearer. But we couldn't keep up. We ended up with a 6 month waiting list in a number of weeks. So we decided to put some of the most commonly requested species, full mod, so people could customize them, in a "Creature Creator" -- now known as an avatar vendor -- so that if 15 people wanted a fox, they could be a fox, and change their hair, clothes, whatever, to their liking. The day we put the Creature Creator up, Arito said that if we "sold 100 of these", he'd eat a plywood prim in RL. To date we've sold almost 50,000 - and he hasn't eaten the plywood yet.
7-Does Luskwood Creatures make custom furries?
-Not like we used to. The custom requests, well, they're not closed forever. We just have to figure out where we'll fit the time in to do them again. I think we all really love doing customs, because they mean a lot. It just takes a lot of time.
8-When you purchase a furry avatar from Luskwood Creatures, what permissions are you allowed to have regarding, copying, modifying and selling?
-They're copy and mod. No transfer. I think we started that trend for avatars, too. You don't want everyone looking cookie-cutter, but some people need a base to start out from. So you want them to be modifiable. And copiable, because you want to be able to mess around, save a version, try another version. The only thing we say don't do is, you know, don't rip them and resell them. So they're no transfer, but we're pretty dedicated on customer service. If something happens to your account, or you get a new account, we'll take care of that. So it's not like you'll ever lose the av due to no-transfer.
9-Whats the difference between Luskwood and Luskwood Creatures?
-Luskwood is the place, and the group. Luskwood is the people. Luskwood Creatures is one of the things we do. Luskwood Bunkies is another one of the things we do. But we're all Luskwood.
10-Has Luskwood Creatures ever expanded into the real world?
-Yeah, we make RL mascots or 'fursuits' now. They're on our website.
11-What are some of the main goals for Luskwood
-Community, viability, sustainability. We want to be self sufficient, and be able to continue to thrive and do what we like to do in SL. We're a creative group and we want to keep creating, and we want that to be a viable thing to do in SL. Artists dont get much of a break in the real world, they're usually relegated to producing advertisements or graphic design. But in SL, you can kind of actually make a decent life out of being an artist, and we want to keep that happening. We want to see the grid, SL, as something that can really work for people. We hear a lot about outside businesses coming into SL but not a lot about groups that were born in SL really succeeding. But I think that can happen. And an important part of that, though, is community. Strangely enough, there has to be a human side to all of this. It's not just enterprise. So what we do, we try to think of how it will affect the grid.
12-Have you ever held any special events in Luskwood to draw a bigger crowd towards furries?
-We hold live music and shows and parties and stuff to draw folks to Luskwood... If they want to get into the furry thing, that's cool, if not, they dont have to. If anything, I hope people just find out that we're more welcoming than they might have heard. It's hard to shake that stigma, when a lot of furry areas are pretty reclusive. Nothing's going to be perfect, but we try to let people know that we'd like to let them get to know who we are.
13-Have any articles been written about Luskwood or Luskwood Creatures?
-Yeah, there's one I really liked in the print version of SLNN. Talked about us playing the 'long game' and how we kind of have a really long term outlook.
14-What are some of the features of Luskwood?
-Well a lot of the land is 'space'. Meaning, trees. A park, nature preserve. Not cramming the real estate with shops. People ask us, "Isn't that a waste of land?" -- No, it isnt. Is a national park a waste of land? No.
15-Another feature for Luskwood is the Jogauni Quest..What is the Jogauni Quest?
-Well, the Jogauni avatars have a backstory. They're tribal elementals. And some features that go along with that backstory. You know, scripting. Kind of like a scavenger hunt. You get more than just the avatar. You get to do something, too. So that's kinda fun, and we developed it so it can be expanded in the future.
16-Is Luskwood considered a park and nature preserve or is Luskwood considered a furry village?
-Absolutely both. Think of it as a park and nature preserve run by furries, for everyone.
17-Whats the fellowship of Luskwoods community like?
-Really tight. I think that might scare some people away some. But yeah, we're a close knit group, and the regulars who come by are pretty dedicated. But there's nothing at all saying that anyone out there at all, can't become part of that. I think a lot of people show up and they're not sure what to think. But again, its about relationships and friendships.
18-Whats the history behind Lusk Estates that it was originally Linden-controlled, but is now handed over to a new group?
-Yeah. A lot ofthe land around Lusk was run by Linden Lab as a nice little covenant-controlled-community. Linden Lab kind of abandoned it and it rotted... it was falling apart, prims everywhere. So we formed the Lusk Estates Land Trust, which is run by Luskwood but is more of a public service. There are some non-furries involved in it, actually. We do 'free rent', for people who want to live in a nice place. You just give land contribution to the group, tier, and thats it, you can live there.
19-In April of 2004 Luskwood was shut down...how come?
-Yeah, that's when the griefers found us. We weren't prepared. None of the grid was, really. Before then, all griefing was pretty much done by one or two notorious people. That was the first "raid". Those guys though, they showed up and expected to find some pretty raunchy stuff. Instead, they found us, a PG area, with not much to make fun of besides "oh, you're furry, lol". But the weird thing that happened that day was all of the terrain was shifted 20 meters to the west. Something to do with the griefers crashing the sim repeatedly, and at one point, it came up wrong. They fixed it, but after that day I guess we kind of lost our innocence. The entire landscape changed. Before then, pretty much everybody on the grid got along with us.
20-Has Luskwood ever been griefed by furry avatar haters? How do you deal with that?
-Well, yeah, we're a big target. We're out there on the mainland and we're easily identifiable. But after five years or so you kind of get a feel as to how things are going to go down, and how to deal with it. We have good security, we have good people, and we have folks there, watching things more often than not. So while yeah it can be an interruption, usually it doesnt get to be too incredibly epic. More of just a "here we go again". If you're dedicated, you can put up with that kind of thing. Some people are never going to be OK with us, and I don't expect them all to be. I just know, for myself, that we try to do good for the grid, and for people who come by. If people want to hate us because we're furry, well, that's their loss I suppose. But really, these groups come and go. Some even turn into OK people. It's strange how that works.
21-In SLversion 1.6 preview, the very First feature-length-film screening occured in Luskwood, what was it, and what was it like to be involved in something new and innovative?
-That was Godzilla 2000 I think, and Philip Linden was there. Philip 'dimmed the lights in the sim' for it. We've been part of a lot of formative things in SL, and it makes us feel good, I think. Here we are, a normally marginalized group, setting an example for the grid, out in the mainstream.
22-What are some of the tales about Luskwood?
-A lot of the real old stuff around here isnt around anymore.
23-What are some rules that apply for Luskwood residents and visitors?
24-Has Luskwood ever faced controversy?
-Sorta, kinda. There are folks out there who claim we wanted to nerf LOD for sculpties, but they're totally reading that wrong. We never wanted that. We still dont want that. Hell, I'm the biggest proponent for high detail around. I still run my own little hack to push the detail slider past what it should go to. But yeah, some folks in Sculptie Dev have it on rumor that we tried to decrease scupltie detail. What it was, was that we said there should be an option for high resolution and low resolution sculpties. So you could choose the high rez ones for avatars and stuff, and use the low rez ones for, say, rocks, and decorative stuff. Without wasting framerate. I'm not sure how that turned into what it has. Also, some notion about us not wanting to use megaprims. Megaprims would be incredibly useful if we'd just get the real go-ahead from Linden Lab that it was explicitly okay to use them on the mainland. So far all we have is that "LL doesn't really do anything about it". I don't want to build a new tree and have it nuked in a week because of some rule LL hasn't clarified.
-I think there are also some folks who think we've got some kind of intimate contact with Linden Lab, that we've got influence at LL. We don't. Really, I wish we had more contact with Linden Lab. Let me rephrase that, I wish we had SOME contact with Linden Lab. Nobody seems to be able to talk to LL anymore. Certainly not us.
25-What are your goals of events, and awareness for
the future or Luskwood?
-Well that depends on where the grid goes. I dont know where the grid is headed. That's a big determination on what happens with Luskwood. I'm pretty sure we'll be there, out there, as prominent as we can be though, come what may. We believe in SL, and in VR, and in the worlds inside of it. So we're not going to leave that.
26-How do you go about promoting Luskwood?
-Honestly, so far, it's really just been word of mouth. We don't run campaigns. But we're out there, on the mainland, every day, meeting new people and stuff. We're an SLCC sponsor. We participate in everything we can. We hold events, we invite the outside in. So thats how we promote it I guess, having people stop by and see what we're about.
27- Have you built or designed anything for Luskwood?
-I've worked on a lot of the avatars, really we all have a hand in that. It takes a real group effort to release an avatar, and to support it. Most recently I had a hand in designing our skunk avatars. Mostly Liam, but you can find the parts by me on them by doing an inspect - oh, and by talking to Liam and asking him how much of a pain in the ass I was during the process. :)
28-What are the pros and cons of Roleplaying Furry Avatars in Second Life?
-Pros, you really get to express yourself. Adding the animal aspect really allows for a degree of identity expression that mere clothes dont do. So you set up an identity and a personality. -- As far as the cons go, well, there's a stigma of course. Somewhat. I always have to think twice when I walk into a place, are they gonna have a problem with me. And sometimes they do. And you have to be thick skinned for that.
29-What are some popular spots to go visit in Luskwood?
-Biggest place of course is the main platform. That's where everyone hangs out. People live in Clara, though, and build stuff and mess around in Perry. There's the pub, where I think we're holding an event next week.
30-Are there any online sites that talk about Luskwood?
-WikiFur and the SL History Wiki has some stuff about us. You can also just search google. I'm surprised how many hits we get these days. And our website, luskwood.org, which has info about us, right now though the front of it is mostly geared towards the RL business.
31-What attracted you to Second Life?
-The next logical step of imagination. I came from text-based roleplaying systems. Being able to build and see your environment is pretty amazing. And with every advancement -- sculpties, windlight... it gets more real, and more able to be what we want it to be. So that's the attraction. Being able to build that world that's inside your head, and then live in it, with other people.
32-What would you like your future in SL to be?
-I hope that we end up with people knowing that we tried to just be a good impact on SL. And that we're here to kind of nurture the spirit of the grid in our own way. As far as Creatures goes, I wanna see us make some stuff people really like and can really get into.
33-What inspired you about Luskwood?
-Perseverance and showing that really, against the odds, you can do good things that make people happy. That a lot of bad things can come and you can weather them. And that people have made real friends in Luskwood, that we played a part in really bettering their real lives.
34-- Is there a group to join for more information on Luskwood or Luskwood Creatures?
-Yeah, there's an info group where we post announcements. I think it's just Luskwood Announcements
35-How do you see the future of Second life to be..will it be geared towards more education or commericalism?
-Unfortunately, commercialism has the biggest impetus. It's what pays the bills. Education is what people do when they want to feel good about themselves. I wish it weren't that way, but if you look at the internet, thats how it went. Look at spam and advertising... Commercialism is what runs the world. But I dont think it has to run everything. It doesn't have to pervade every aspect.
36-What are some of the drawbacks that your experiencing with Luskwood or Luskwood Creatures. (competition/campaigns)
-Oh, heh, competition is always there but, sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. Journey not a destination. As long as you keep creating, then, you're doing what's right. So I'm not worried about that. The other av makers, for the most part, are really good people. And we get along better than most people think or would like to think. As long as folks are creating, then there's good stuff going on. As far as drawbacks? Well, I think Linden Lab is kind of leaving the community scene a bit. I think they've got bigger fish to fry than in-world groups like us. So that's hard on us. Sometimes I feel like there's not going to be much concentration on features or enhancements that'll help in-world groups, places, and businesses. And that things that'll help IBM or the like will get the most attention. But as I just said, that's what turns the wheels. You gotta stake out your part and survive.
37-If you have need help or any questions about Luskwood or Luskwood Creatures, who should you contact?
-Well, myself or Eltee Statosky. I'm usually the one out there doing the talking :P
